The University Library and Knowledge Center of the University of Pécs held its final lecture of the semester on 27th May as part of its "Green Library" program series, which took a critical look at the sustainability of current economic and social systems. Dr. Katalin Erdős, associate dean and assistant professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, analyzed global challenges from an economic perspective, balancing theory and practical experience.
The lecture began with the definition of sustainable development formulated by the Brundtland Commission in 1987. The speaker then presented two approaches to sustainability: "strong" and "weak" sustainability. While the latter is based on the substitutability of natural and man-made capital, the former requires the strict conservation of natural resources. The conceptual difference is not just a theoretical debate, but a crucial issue in current economic policy and environmental decisions.
