The Vitalizing Water - the Green University Program of the University of Pécs and the No.1 Practical Primary School of the University of Pécs paid tribute to the conscious use of water with several exciting programs
Invisible to our eyes, the groundwater beneath our feet is one of, if not the most important treasure of our planet. It accounts for almost all of the world's available drinking water, but climate change and soil pollution are increasingly threatening this priceless treasure. The University of Pécs is making unremitting efforts to highlight the key role of water management under the 2030 Framework for Sustainable Development. This issue is addressed in Sustainable Development Goal 6 - "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". On the occasion of World Water Day, on 22nd March, the Green University Program of the University of Pécs calls attention to the need to act quickly to preserve water. More than 2 billion people are already facing water scarcity, which is set to worsen rapidly in the coming years.
Around this day, the Green University Program of the University of Pécs and the No.1 Practical Primary School of the University of Pécs organized a series of exciting activities to honour the conscious use of water. On 21st March, the students of class 4.a gained useful knowledge during a visit to the Wastewater Treatment Plant of Pécs. They got answers to questions such as: How is wastewater produced? How is wastewater purified? Where does the purified wastewater go? Class 3.b visited the Water Treasury. In a chemistry lesson, pupils in grades 7-8 competed in pairs to find out the reactions of aqueous solutions (tap water, fizzy drinks, bicarbonate of soda) and whether these solutions can be consumed.
The classes 1.c and 1.b had a fun quiz to test their knowledge and learn about the crucial role of water management. The pupils took measurements and carried out experiments on water purification and conservation, and took part in a water droplet collection robot adventure. At the end of the quiz, the pupils expressed their experiences on water saving.
On 29th March, the students visited the Malomvölgy Lake, where they carried out playful activities at several stations, through the Ecofriends Science Talent Workshop. They investigated the chemical reaction of the water, identified the flora of the water from pictures, and learned about the fauna of the water through riddles and Activity games. They investigated the chemistry of the water, identified the flora of the water from pictures, and learned about the fauna of the water through riddles and Activity games. They had to guess which plant they were touching with their hands while keeping their eyes closed. They drew pictures of the wonderful landscape.
