A Pécsi Tudományegyetem 2024-ben is a zöld jövő éllovasa

The University of Pécs remains a leader in green initiatives in 2024

The University of Pécs once again achieved an outstanding position in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2024, finishing 25th out of 1,477 universities in 95 countries. With this, the UP not only earned the title of Hungary's greenest university for the fifth time, but also further strengthened its position among the international leaders in sustainability-oriented universities.

Dr. Katalin Szili, the UP's curator responsible for sustainability, said: "The university has achieved significant results since the model change. Among the flagship projects of the maintaining foundation, one of the most important, alongside innovation, is the development of a systematic approach to education, research, and operations in response to the challenges of the 21st century. Progress towards sustainability goals proves that the university is successfully implementing its well-thought-out strategy. Our goal is to integrate sustainability into all areas of education and research, while the development of the university's infrastructure also contributes to reducing the environmental burden." He also emphasized that the establishment of the UP Green University Program Office and the Sustainable Development Coordination Council will help to implement sustainability efforts at the system level.

István Decsi, Chancellor of the University of Pécs, emphasized that "universities not only perform educational and research tasks, but also play an active role in shaping social attitudes. The university is committed to setting an example for other organizations by applying a sustainability approach. In addition, we believe it is important that our innovative research and development not only supports sustainability goals, but also has a tangible positive impact at the economic and social levels."

"Universities play a key role in shaping the attitudes of future generations and thus contribute to a shift in social attitudes towards sustainability. The establishment of the UP Green University Program Office in 2024 will enable the development of a conscious mindset, as well as a deeper and broader transfer of knowledge and awareness among university citizens, with a focus on development aspects," added Tünde Kulcsár, head of the UP Green University Program Office.

According to the list, the world's "greenest" university in 2024 – retaining its top position from last year – is Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, followed by Nottingham Trent University in the UK and the University of Groningen, also in the Netherlands.
