The UP is the 21st greenest university in the world!
In 2022, the University of Pécs (UP) has been ranked for the seventh time in the "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings". The University of Pécs was ranked 21st among the 1050 universities in the "world's green universities", and for the third time out of the 11 Hungarian universities in the ranking, it was the best university in Hungary, earning the title of the greenest Hungarian university in 2022.
"It is important for the UP to reduce the environmental impact of its activities and the exposure and vulnerability of its infrastructure and operations to local environmental impacts, and to support its collaborating partners in doing the same. Systems thinking, a complex sustainability approach and partner cooperation provide an opportunity to address the challenges holistically. Overall, this result demonstrates clearly that the 4-5 year sustainability goals set at the time of the model change have been met within a year and a half. The UP has a track record as the greenest university in Hungary, but it is clear that it needs to remain open and receptive to innovations that reduce its ecological footprint. On the one hand, our institution is constantly inspired by the spirit of competition, and on the other hand, it is a permanent incentive for all disciplines within the UP's education and research portfolio to address the issue", said Katalin Szili dr., member of the UP Board of Trustees responsible for sustainability.
"Through its Green University Program, the University of Pécs wishes to further enhance its sustainability efforts, to do its utmost to promote environmentally conscious attitudes in all sectors, and to disseminate sustainable solutions vertically and horizontally, especially in the natural, social and economic environment of the South Transdanubian region and the national and international arena. The transformation of environmental awareness into action depends on many elements, but it means providing an alternative and an opportunity for the staff, faculty, and students of the university to act with responsibility towards nature and the environment, creating the chance to live more environmentally friendly lives", added István Decsi, Chancellor of the UP.
"Thanks to its conscious and disciplined environmental ambitions and its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the UP has been able to move ahead in the ever-expanding international ranking year after year. The UP Green University Program is a catalyst for green innovations to achieve the SDGs. The continuous improvement of the University of Pécs is visible in the system based on objective indicators. The University is committed to the green idea and plans its future developments accordingly", said Tünde Kulcsár, Program Coordinator of the Green University of the UP.
According to the list, the "greenest" university in the world in 2022 - maintaining its top position from last year - will be the Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, followed by the Nottingham Trent University in the UK and the University of Nottingham in the UK.
